WHAT IS A MENTAL DISORDER? A mental disorder is a clinically significant group of symptoms (behavioral or psychological) which causes an individual distress, disability, or the increased risk of suffering pain, disability, loss of freedom or death.
Mental disorders describe a disease process, not a person. (A person has schizophrenia, is not a schizophrenic.) Persons may have the same disease and appear to manage it quite differently. The DSM-IV Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder) follows the medical model of illness. Mental disorders are defined based on scientific inquiry and study of symptoms, signs, behaviors and life course of the disorder. Like most physical disorders, mental disorders are real and treatable.

MENTAL ILLNESS TOPICS:

Mental Health is happiness, peace of mind, enjoyment, satisfaction. Mental Health is feeling comfortable with, and accepting who you are. Mental Health is being able to meet the demands of life. Mental Health is taking disappointment in stride. Mental health is smiling – being happy to be alive and living your life.
